Since July 1, 2006, Volker Then has been the Managing Director of the Centre for Social Investment at Heidelberg University. Previously, he worked at the Bertelsmann Foundation (Guetersloh, Germany), where he served as Director Philanthropy and Foundations from 1999 to 2006, built the philanthropy division of the foundation and was deputy head of that division from 2000 to 2003. Prior to this assignment, beginning in 1995, Dr. Then was the Director of Cultural Orientation of the Bertelsmann Foundation, after he joined the foundation as a program manager in 1994. Before starting with the foundation, he earned his Ph.D. in social history from the Free University of Berlin (supervised by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Kocka on social history of entrepreneurs in the industrial revolution). He holds an M.A. from Bielefeld University in History, Sociology and Economics and has studied at the universities at Tübingen, Bielefeld and Oxford (St. Antony's College).
Dr. Then is a Senior Fellow of the Center for Civil Society, School of Public Affairs, UCLA, and a member of numerous boards and committees, among them the National Advisory Committee of New Ventures, the National Initiative to Promote the Growth of Philanthropy in the USA (Washington, D.C.), the Legal and Tax Task Forces of the European Foundation Centre (Brussels), the Editorial Board of "@lliance" (UK), and the boards of three German foundations, as well as the Editorial Board of Stiftung & Sponsoring, Verl/Berlin. He was a member of the Governing Council (2000-2006) and the International Committee (2000-2006) of the European Foundation Centre (Brussels), the International Committee, Council on Foundations in Washington, D.C. (2000-2004), and the Executive Session in Philanthropy of the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (1999-2002).
Volker Then was born 1961 in Stuttgart, is married and has two sons.
